8Point Update

I mentioned last time that I would keep you up to date about the 8Point Video Communication product and opportunity.

Well, I failed you. You see, I have an advantage over most of you - 8Point is located just a few minutes from my home here in Dallas. A live demo session is carried on every Tuesday night and I had that as a priority to do this week. But, early Tuesday morning I woke up with a very uncomfortable feeling in my stomach and things went downhill from there - I will leave the details to your imagination.

Twenty-four hours later I felt pretty good, but in between my stomach, back and head all hurt and I couldn't do anything about any of them. TurboTax User's Warning

I wanted to pass on some news I received recently. If you use TurboTax, you should know what you will receive in the 2002 version. If you're like me, you have already received a CD in the mail that requires payment and validation to use. It seemed like a clever marketing technique when I received it. But I learned yesterday it carries with it some unexplained, unexpected, and probably unwanted consequences.

TurboTax has added an anti-theft feature which places, with no warning to you, an extra program on your computer, called C-Dilla. This program is used to tie the software to your computer, so you cannot move it to another computer without paying again. In itself, not a problem for many of us, an absolutely unacceptable pain for the rest. This program works by monitoring all use of your CD drive and has been tied to several instances of CD drives ceasing to work, and worse, cannot be removed without a low level drive format. When confronted with these problems, Intuit said they will add an uninstaller, but the tax program will be unusable. I frankly don't like being treated as a thief, especially with no warning about what they were doing or its possible consequences.

In the meantime, I plan to use TaxCut this year. I understand it is comparable to TurboTax in cost and ease of use, and accepts last year's TurboTax data so you don't need to re-enter it.


Scoping Your Competition

Unless I'm wrong, the average Internet business owner spends a good bit of time seeing what the competition is doing. That can be helpful, up to a point. There is, of course, the danger that you will assume everything that your competitors are doing is correct, and follow them down some wrong paths. Instead of deciding which of your competitor's marketing techniques are worth duplicating, I want to suggest you spend some time looking at what your competition isn't doing. I'm talking about differentiation.

Here I am, so buy from me
You see, lots of Internet businesses operate pretty much on the basis that “I’m here, so you should buy from me.” They’re not doing anything to make themselves stand out in the marketplace. If you are have a market niche all to yourself, perhaps you can survive or ever thrive on that basis. But the majority of businesses do have competition, and it is growing. See an opp*ortunity here? What if you did something that 90% of your competitors didn’t bother to do – make a compelling case for visitors to buy from you rather than the competition? I’m not saying that the other businesses don't bother to advertise, but that advertisement (this is what I sell) and differentiation marketing (this is why you should buy what I’m selling) are significantly different.
 

A pizza example
A marketing expert did a test recently, calling 25 pizza restaurants and claiming that his group of 10 couldn’t agree which pizza joint to go to. He then asked each one to tell him why they should come to that shop. “What makes your pizza better,” he asked? He got answers like “I don’t know,” “You can go anyplace you want,” and, “We use better ingredients.” Does any of those replies make you want to run to that restaurant? Some shops took the opportunity to explain what their better ingredients were, and make a claim for superiority based on their wide selection. Few took the opp*ortunity to really explain why those better ingredients were really better, or how meticulous their preparation was, etc. Chances are your competition is no more in tune to differentiation marketing than these pizza shops.
 

What does this mean to me?
No, you’re not likely to get a request to explain why your product should be a buyer’s choice, but it should cause you to think about what you are or aren’t doing to make any distinction between your product and business and the competition’s. If you are really doing something better than the competition, tell the world about it! Don’t wait for them to figure it out for themselves – they probably won’t! But I’m selling the same products as ten other sites, you may be saying. Look at it this way – even if every other business sells the exact same product in essentially the same way, if you advertise the great things about your product, your business, and the way you treat your customers, when none of the other sellers bother to do so, guess who wins?
 

In practical terms….
So what can you say about your business or its product that seems obvious to you but may be completely unknown to your customers? The specifics depend on the nature of your product and business. If you feature products that are unique or unusual, the quality of the raw products, length of their manufacturing process, details of construction and their very uniqueness are things you could highlight. If you primarily sell as an affiliate and don't have unique products, you need to look at other factors. Explore your product more thoroughly to uncover features or benefits the competition missed. Highlight your guarantee, superior customer service, friendliness, etc.

Get Descriptive
An important differentiation technique involves planting positive word pictures in your site visitor's mind, associated only with you and your business. Doc Phelps' 'Bodacious Personal Support' claim (see http://www.a1ebiz.com), for example, plants in my mind a commitment to give support that is not only friendly but extensive (maybe bodacious means more here in Texas!).  He has also wisely included his support promise in his product line statement right at the top of the page.  Doing so conveys the idea that, regardless of which of my products you buy, you are going to get my 'bodacious personal support' along with them. No need to search the site to understand how he treats his customers - he tells you up front. Does this give you any ideas about how you can make your business stand out?

Put it all together
In summary, don’t leave it up to your site visitors to figure out why they should buy from you, tell them. What the other businesses are doing that they don’t bother to tell their visitors counts for zero when it comes to turning those visitors into customers. You should be telling your story descriptively, in detail, and with enthusiasm. After all, if you aren’t enthusiastic about what makes your business and its products stand out, why should your visitors be? They are looking for a reason to buy from one business instead of another, so why not give them several? When you educate your visitors you stand to gain a friend, and a customer!

More On Spam Filters

Seems like this subject comes up for some reason in every newsletter. Things haven't gotten any better, but I can report a better tool for you in the fight to get your legitimate ads and ezines delivered. If you recall, I mentioned a service where you could send your emails to be checked for words that could trigger spam filters. That seemed to work pretty well, but the last time I tried it, my reply didn't come back for 2 days. A little too late to be of use. Well, when I saw software being offered that did basically the same thing right on your own computer, I had to get it. It was especially interesting because I had discussed with a programmer friend the concept of just such a piece of software. Must have been a good idea!

Anyway, I got it, tried it, like it and now you can have it too. It is called Filter Buster and was developed by SDT Advertising. It comes with master resell rights, so you can sell it and also sell the rights for others to sell it. Great deal, I think. It's simple to use. You just start the program, paste in the text you want to check and the trigger words instantly appear at the bottom.

Predicting The Future Online

However, I want to share my predictions for 2003 and the trends I see affecting how you will use the Internet for both business and pleasure. 


** Anti-Spam!

Anybody with an email account for more than three days has gotten unsolicited email (referred to as Spam) from people they don't know. These people offer to sell them everything from acne treatment to inkjet cartridges. 

As federal and state lawmakers weigh into the battle
against Spam, you can expect two significant developments this year:

First, anti-Spam software sales will skyrocket among home and business users.  Unfortunately, unless somebody invents a solution that actually works well, the end results won't fit the promises made to sell the products. 

On a side note: It will prove very interesting to see how many of the anti-Spam product vendors will actually use Spam to sell their wares!

Second, anti-Spam sentiment will massively affect
legitimate online business owners trying to communicate with their customers via e-mail. 

New services will spring up to help even the smallest
businesses secure their communications with customers and avoid the "Spam filters."


** Lights, Camera, Action!

The use of multimedia, including video, pictures, and sound, along with other interactive devices, will really take off this year. 

However, the proliferation of multimedia will not occur
because of higher Internet access speeds through DSL or cable.

Cheaper and better computers, combined with improved "streaming" software technology, will drive this multimedia trend. As computers and web servers on either end of the information exchange get faster at encoding and decoding data, the need for broadband access lessens.


** Sold to the Highest Bidder

Expect auction sites to see all-time highs in sales and
revenues this year.  With a sluggish economy, people look to save and make money any way they can, and buying through eBay makes it easier than ever. 


** Do you Yahoo?

Search giant Yahoo will rebound this year from a couple of poor business decisions.  Expect them to regain the top spot as the world's number one search portal by the end of 2003. 


** "Micro-Businesses" Will Dominate

Using "guerrilla marketing" tactics, small businesses will spread like wildfire online.  These businesses won't bother with startup capital, or IPO's; they'll simply reach profitability within 30 days or close up shop. 

Also, expect to see "Big" business start adapting these techniques by creating special units within larger corporations that reward the entrepreneurial online spirit.

So take the challenge!
