Writing a Book?

[firstname], I'm sure you keep reading that the quickest way to success online is to have your own product to sell. And also that the best way to get your own product is to write a book. This creates a huge mental hurdle in the minds of many people. But, although writing comes more naturally for some than for others, even natural writers do it without knowing the "how" of it. Hello, glad you joined us again. A lot has happened since the last issue. I attended the Internet Marketing Big Seminar here in Dallas last weekend. It was great - more about that later. It was also a sad time. As we were preparing to start Saturday morning, word came of the Columbia tragedy, made even sadder, if possible, by the fact that it was played out virtually over our heads. I am bringing you some of my thoughts about that event in the LifeBuilder article today.

As I noted above, the Big Seminar was an exciting and informative time. It was fun to meet some of the top marketers, as well as make a lot of new friends among the attendees. It was especially interesting to meet Jimmy Brown. He put on a fantastic presentation that gave us all lots of things to put into practice. But most interesting was the fact that I had a mental picture of Jimmy being about 65 years old. Guess what - both Jimmy and I were glad to learn he was a lot younger! I have included a few pictures I took there (you can judge Jimmy's age for yourself!)

Also, the last 2 weeks were somewhat notable for what didn't happen. I planned to bring news about the 8Point product from a first-hand meeting, but the meeting didn't happen, so I still have lots of questions I will need to get answered before I can really tell you anything new. Frank Garon had some personal observations about the product and how great it performs, but I am looking for more specific information to report to you.

What to do: The big question

A major hurdle to anyone wanting to start an online business is what that business should be. Often the desire to start outstrips the thought process of what to do or how to do it. Everybody else seems to have found their niche, but nothing seems quite right for me. Here are a few questions to ask yourself that may get the process off dead center.

What do I see myself as being good at?
Don't make the mistake of committing to doing something that looks like it might be profitable without addressing the question of how it fits with your talents. If you love the idea of being in business but hate computers, this doesn't mean you can't succeed online, just that you shouldn't expect to do everything yourself. There are an increasing number of services which do all the grunt work of building the business infrastructure, leaving you to concentrate on your products and customers.*

What do others see me as being good at?
There needs to be some correlation between the talents you see and the ones others recognize, or you may be incorrectly assessing yourself. Don't be afraid of asking those who know you best to be frank about what they see as your strengths and weaknesses.

What were my childhood strengths?
This may seem an unusual question, but often the things you liked to do as a child - before you were influenced by other's expectations - turn out to be the truest indication of you core desires. As a personal example, I was an avid reader as a child and enjoyed writing. As I grew older, I found electronics to be fascinating and ended up as a degreed engineer. Only as I approached the end of an engineering career did I transition into technical writing and realize how much more satisfaction writing gave me than engineering.

What is my core passion?
This question can be a real show-stopper for many people. We tend to move along through life without having to face this question, so we don't. By core passion I don't mean whether I always wanted to sell books or cat food. I mean what makes you come alive. Author Gil Bailie writes "Don't ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive, and go do that; because what the world needs is people who have come alive." This can be applied to many areas of our lives, of course, but certainly to an activity which will consume a large part of our time and efforts.

Just a beginning...
This is only a beginning in the discovery process you need to go through before you decide what shape your business will take. But it may also be the most important. Once you have faced the core issues of what lights your fire and get confirmation from others, then you are ready to start thinking how who you are could fit into a specific business goal. Search Engine Optimization Tools

There was a simpler time, a time when the world moved a little more slowly, a time for lazy porch swings and casual conversation. 

During simpler times Yahoo was free, everyone just put descriptive (and accurate) keywords into their Meta Tags, getting a listing was a simple process.

Those days are gone.

Now, in order to get a good listing, you have to create an entire page that fits that search engine's personal preferences, which are as fickle as a teenager's heart, and then pay to have them look at it.

And after hours of tinkering, you still find that Google ranks you on page 84,354 and Yahoo lists you not at all.

YUCK!  You would think that someone would come up with a better way.

Guess what?  They have.

Now there are a variety of products and services that will help you get your pages listed well with search engines. Here are a few of the best ways to get that accomplished:

*Get The Whole Package*

If you haven't already put up a site, or if you want to build a secondary site that will drive traffic to your main sales site, this is the ticket.

Ken Evoy has put together a great product that will not only get your site a great listing, it also builds the site for you.  It's pretty impressive.  For less than the cost of hosting alone, this will put you in the mo^ney.  It's like getting site optimization, site construction and expert advice all for fr^ee.

*Do It Yourself*

While I think Ken's product is great for most people, some are the "do it yourself" type.  If you have some web building ability, the hands-down favorite across the board is Web Position Gold.  It is the secret weapon that many of the site optimization companies use to create the reports for and optimize the sites of their clients.

If you have a site that CAN be listed well, this is a
product you will want.

*Pay Someone Else*

There are a number of companies that will do the
optimization for you.  They fall into two categories:

1.  Those who change your pages then submit and monitor them for you

-AND-

2.  Those who use a "cloaking" program to "trick" the search engines into ranking your page more highly.

Expect to pay BIG BU^CKS for either of these services--as much as $5000 initially and then $500 per month.  Both can work well, but you need to be aware of some drawbacks:

Just because a company has gotten a good listing for another site does not mean they can do so for you. Don't just check out the references these services give, check out their guar^antee.

Cloaking pages for better listings--fooling the search
engines--is a controversial procedure.  Some of the search engines will heavily penalize or even de-list and black list a domain that is using cloaking.  Be aware of that risk going in.

*Cloak It Yourself*

Peter Bray has put together a software program that allows you to cloak your OWN pages.  All of the feedback on this to me has been good, though it still carries the same de-listing/black-listing risk.   Here is a link:
