The paralyzing sleet storm that coated Dallas with 2-3" of solid ice last week has gone, and the sun has made a token appearance. It's March so spring ought to be starting! After all, it's the only compensation we get here for being roasted from June to September. Enough complaints about the weather; I know many of you have it far worse. This is one of those weeks when things simply won't go as they should. Several things I had lined up to bring you today will have to wait. But maybe they will be better for waiting!

- The E-Book Format Question - an Update The E-Book Format
Question - an Update Anyone who has considered creating an e-book has faced the format question. Should I use an EXE format or go with PDF? If you haven't read a good summary of the various issues involved with an eye on the latest products, read on! As you probably already know, EXE stands for 'executable' and is the extension for files created by various e-book compilers (as well as the general extension for any applications which run on PCs). PDF stands for Portable Document Format, and is the extension for files created by Adobe Acrobat and several other applications. Why choose one over the other? As usual, there are several tradeoffs which you need to consider. 1. Industry practice - The PDF format has become an industry standard for documents of a variety of types, not just e-books. One primary reason is that PDF files can be opened on either PCs or Macintosh computers, while the EXE format is PC-compatible only. PDF files can be read using the fr^ee Adobe Acrobat reader program. Using an e-book compiler means giving up an estimated 8% of the online market composed of Mac users. 2. File size - A PDF file is small, one of the purposes of the format introduction. Generally speaking, the file size cannot be substantially reduced by further compression, making zipping of PDF files unnecessary. 3. Printing - The Acrobat Reader program allows easy printing of a document by individual page, range of pages or the complete document. Generally speaking, EXE format e-books allow, at most, single page or complete document printing. 4. Creation - PDF documents can be created from any Microsoft Word document or from an HTML page. EXE format compilers generally require the book to be created from HTML pages only. 5. Automatic features - PDF documents are automatically numbered, EXE documents are not. 6. Navigation - PDF documents have a built-in 'bookmark' column on the left, allowing navigating to any particular page instantly. Also, a thumbnail picture of each page can be shown in the left column, allowing you to choose a page by appearance. However, bookmarking a document is a separate process, done after the PDF is created, as is the addition of clickable links. Here the EXE format has clear advantages, since it is based on HTML pages with inherent linking capability. Although the navigation structure is easily added while the HTML pages are created, it is still an extra step, requiring roughly the same time as PDF bookmarking. 7. Readability - this is a somewhat subjective factor, but in general the EXE format gives you the flexibility to produce documents more conducive to being read on-screen. After all, they are created from HTML pages which are automatically more familiar to on-screen viewers. One look at the average PDF page tells you that you are seeing a printed page on-screen. This is not a deciding factor, just one to be aware of, especially if you are creating large PDF documents. A somewhat offsetting issue is the fact that the appearance of EXE documents can vary widely, depending on the browser being used and its specific settings. 8. Security - Here the issues are determined more by which specific PDF creator or e-book compiler you are using. Purchasing the full Adobe Acrobat product gives you the ability to password protect the document, and separately password protect document modification privileges. Most fr^ee or low-cost PDF creation products provide no security features. Some EXE compilers, however, allow locking the document until a code is provided, as well as later disabling the document. Also, it is almost impossible to pass a virus with a PDF file, unlike an EXE file. 9. Branding - The ability to customize an e-book with affiliate links has been used as a great viral marketing tool. Until recently, it has also been limited to compiled e-books and unavailable to PDF documents. This has recently changed with the introduction of a branding utility for PDF documents from http://www.viralpdf.com/ 10. Cost - The advantage has been on the EXE format compilers compared to the full Adobe Acrobat product, which sells for about $250. Many EXE format compilers are available for less than $100. However, there are low cost ways to create PDF documents. Following is a list of sources of various PDF and EXE format document creators.
