Everything, But It's Close Attitude Isn't Everything, But It's
Close Last time I talked about the mindset that is necessary to build a successful business. There is a closely allied, but separate idea that I want to explore briefly, and that is attitude. For my purpose here I would distinguish mindset from attitude, considering attitude as a more general outlook on surrounding circumstances, but important to your business nevertheless. I have read articles that tried to convince me that with the proper attitude, I could do anything. In most cases, I am suspicious of absolute statements. Let me hasten to add that I also rebel at the modern concept that there are no absolutes, that all is relative. There are eternal absolutes - absolutes because they are rooted outside ourselves, tied to an eternal Creator. But the circumstances that brought one person great success and wealth don't automatically transfer by any formula, e-book or e-course. Tying success to any one factor, be it attitude or perseverance or thorough planning, is deceptive, to my thinking. But don't expect to find success in business, relationships or life in general with a bad attitude. Of course, neither I nor you have a bad attitude. It's that other guy or gal that has a sour approach to life. So maybe it's easier to talk about improving my attitude, by first considering why it is important. First of all, your attitude dictates how you react to the inevitable unpleasant circumstances that hit you nearly every day. We can't control the things that come our way, after all, we can only control how we respond to them. Examining your response to some recent setbacks will tell you more about your attitude than anyone else can. Second - and following along with the first - the way you respond is almost always more significant than the circumstances you were dealt. From birth we have been developing response mechanisms to everything we experience, and the ratio of responses to initiatives is probably about 3 or 4 to 1. So we are constantly acting in response to inputs, and largely acting automatically based on the attitude we have developed. So, saying it again in different words, the general direction of our lives is more controlled by attitude than by circumstances. Try applying this truth to the next set of problems that confront you. Evaluate your response and see what it says about your underlying attitude toward life. You will be taking the first step toward reshaping your life, and hopefully the degree of success you will experience.
