Faster dial-up?
I was interested to hear about a new high-speed modem technology being put to use by NetZero and others. It's advertised as being up to 5 times as fast as regular dial-up modem service. Of course, it needs to be compared with DSL or cable modem service providing up to 20 times faster data transfer. Still, if you are not in a location served by either DSL or cable, you might want to look into it. It works by a combination of data compression and image optimization. The compression only applies to some data such as HTML, JPEG/GIF images simple text files and most email. Email attachments and streaming audio or video can't be compressed. In independent tests, web sites loaded twice as fast as a regular dial-up connection. NetZero charges $5/month extra for this service, called NetZero HiSpeed. Juno offers the same service under the SpeedBand name, and EarthLink offers Earthlink Plus. You can read more here.

Spam Again
And the anti-spam wars continue. Although some spam you receive results from programs that spew out emails using various combinations of names and services, your email address can also be harvested from your web pages, print ads, newsletters, newsgroup postings etc. There is a way to stop that process. In case you didn't grab it before, it is here.

Are You in the clear?
As I've noted here, there is continuing discussion about the need to modify your website to be in compliance with FTC guidelines. I have even published a number of links to help in that regard. Still, many people have the nagging feeling they might be liable for something they haven't thought of. Products promising to answer those questions have popped up, of course, but many found them too expensive. A much more reasonable alternative has just been announced, and that is the "The Online Marketer's & Website Owner's Legal Information Clinic." It's a 3-hour MP3 of a legal information tele-seminar (with PDF transcript) that Jim Edwards did with attorney Bruce Safran. You might want to take a look here.

What's the worst disaster you can imagine that could happen to your business? Stolen website, newsletter subscriber list lost? How about a fire that wiped out your home office along with your home? I think you'll agree it's the loss of data, whether it's your subscriber list or any number of other files that you use daily and rely on. I expect that you have your own story of having lost data at some point, even if it was only a hard drive back when 10 MB was a big drive!

Most of us have taken advantage of the low cost of CD-ROM drives and CD-R or RW disks to back up data. But that would only be effective in case of a hard drive failure. What about a fire that took not only your computer, but your backup disks neatly stored alongside your computer? This scenario highlights the need for offsite backups, if you have data that is critical to your business, and who doesn't?

The same fire that swallowed your carefully-recorded backup disks could also take the records of purchase for your computer and other equipment. By now I'm sure you have begun to think more seriously and extensively about just how disastrous a fire, flood, tornado, or any number of occurrences could be, if you keep all your records in one location.

Some of the basic items that you will want to store, at a minimum, are your business assets - your hardware and software, with version/serial numbers and replacement costs. Don't forget affiliate ID's and links. Copies of your personal ID items such as credit cards and driver's license are also important.

While many of these things can be kept safe by a periodic backup stored at some other location, there are a host of other data items that aren't as easily retained. How about all the ongoing projects that you have, that change every day? Transporting physical copies of these kinds of files can become too bothersome to be worth it, that is, until disaster strikes. 

To solve this problem, Apple computer users have available an offsite backup solution installed right on the computer. Now Windows users can have the same ease of storage, using a piece of software that communicates with an online service, compressing and backing up your data while you continue to work.

Today is not too soon to think about that worst-case scenario and take prudent steps to survive it.

** Blog, Blog, Blog

Web logs, commonly referred to as "blogs," represent all the rage right now in online publishing.

Not really a newsletter or traditional publishing, blogs
resemble more of a web-based diary where the creator
records their thoughts, posts links, or responds to
questions.

If you want to find one of the thousands of blogs online about everything from cooking to puppy potty training, log onto www.daypop.com to search through a rapidly expanding database.

** Who's on the line?

Anyone with caller ID asks the same question when an
unfamiliar number pops up on the screen. "Who is that?"

Even with enhanced caller ID you can't always figure out who called.

Rather than call back and risk looking foolish
by saying something like "Somebody called me from this number.", you can log on to www.anywho.com or
www.addresses.com to do a reverse search by phone number. You can also do a number of other searches on people's addresses and other information.

** Identity Theft

Sadly, not everyone in the world tries to operate under the "Golden Rule."

Identity theft rates as one of the fastest growing crimes in the world, mostly because it's such an easy crime to commit.

Whether you go online or not, everyone carries a risk of falling victim to an identity thief.

Prevention and proper information rank as the top ways to prevent identity theft from happening to you. Log on to www.idtheftcenter.org to understand the risks and get specific information for making yourself a less-likely target.

** Free Conference Calls

Need to schedule a conference call with family, friends or business associates, but don't want to pay for an expensive bridge line or sign a long-term contract?

Log on to www.freeconference.com and sign up for a free account.

You can put up to 100 people on a phone call together (long distance charges apply) and use the service to make presentations, do product training, or even hold a family reunion by phone.

Since they don't charge for the service, I'd advise using this one fast since most free services end up shutting down after a few brief months.
