Spyware on Your Computer?
Have you noticed your computer seems to run slower
than it used to? If you are in the habit of downloading music, movie clips,
games or other files, it is likely that some of these files may have been
accompanied by "Spyware" or "Adware." These applications are often added to
your downloads by Internet advertisers wanting to track your online habits.
Although "legal," they can cause your computer to run slower or even freeze
up. To check your system for such applications, click
here and get a
no-cost scan and the opportunity to remove these files. I run Norton
Internet Security with its automatic update function, but a scan of my
system showed 99 files and 34 registry keys with these unwanted
applications.
How Are Your Keywords?
You already know that it is important to optimize your web pages and your
PPC advertising around keywords, but you may have been settling for less
than the best selection of keywords. You can waste lots of money on keywords
that sound great but aren't the subject of many searches. Yes, I know Overture and Google have
tools to help, but they fall far short of optimum. To see what I mean, get
your own free top 500 keyword report, and see what you are missing. It's
right
here!
Google's AdWords Conversion Tracker
In answer to Overture's ConversionCounter, Google has launched a tool of its
own to help advertisers track the results of their ad campaigns. Google
gives the option of Basic Tracking, which just tracks the total number of
conversions or actions, or Customized Tracking, which allows you to track
multiple conversions such as downloads, sign-ups and purchases for each
clickthrough. You can also assign a value to each action. This tool may
pressure Overture to keep their tool free rather than the limited time they
stated when it was announced. Learn more at
https://adwords.google.com/
And GoogleAlerts
If you want to track the popularity of anything on the web, whether it's
your name, your website or your product, you should look at
http://www.googlealerts.com
You can enter up to 5 search terms and receive notice
when new search results appear. You can also enter your own name to find out
what new sites appear when people Google your name. You will receive
automatic email notice of new search results. Perfect if you are trying to
launch a viral campaign of some kind.
Internet Archive Recall
And speaking of net popularity, you can go to
http://recall.archive.org/ to search the
popularity of any given terms on the Internet between certain dates. This
tool can help you track when your website or product really took off.
The Audio Generation
As you can read in Jim Edward's article below, adding audio to your
website or email, when done well, can add credibility and selling power that
is hard to match other ways. While Jim outlines the available options, I
have chosen the AudioGenerator product by Armand Morin.
You can have your testimonials recorded, get professional
recordings, record by phone or by your own microphone. Now there's even a
wizard to put your audio message on eBay! Any way you do it is so simple,
you will think of lots of ways to use it. I just added a voice message to my
All About Autoresponders product page. It goes like this...
To get your own audio messages going, just visit
here.
A Lesson I Like
A crow was sitting on a tree, doing nothing all day. A
small rabbit saw the crow, and asked him, "Can I also sit like you and do
nothing all day long?"
The crow answered: "Sure, why not." So, the rabbit sat on the ground below
the crow, and rested. All of a sudden, a fox appeared, jumped on the rabbit
and ate it.
Management Lesson: To be sitting and doing nothing, you must be
sitting very high up.

What Are You Doing For the Holidays?
By Glenn Gordon
(c) Glenn Gordon - All Rights reserved
As online business owners, you undoubtedly think about
seasonal issues, at least once in a while. Brick and mortar retailers,
especially clothing stores, plan their whole year around the calendar, of
course. Their customers often come for specific items relating to the
season, all year long. You may believe such thinking doesn't apply to you at
all, but you might want to reconsider.
I don't want to suggest a purely mercenary approach to
holidays, especially Christmas. I frankly resent the
pull-out-Santa-after-Halloween approach that seems to be the norm in most
stores, and treasure the family times that taught me this was a special
event, even before I was old enough to know what it really was (the birthday
party for the King of creation!). But if you are in business, you need to
recognize what your prospective customers are buying and when, and tailor
your products and sales accordingly.
If your products are limited and unlikely to be given as
gifts, you might want to add some special bonuses, or add some other special
incentive. If you have a mix of sites, you could consider putting extra
emphasis on the ones that have wide appeal, offer small items that could be
popular stocking-stuffers, or are otherwise attractive to Christmas shoppers
of a certain category.
If you sell only information products, it might seem
difficult to come up with anything special. However, since the new year
often causes us to re-think what we have been doing in lots of ways, you
might consider a package of ebooks centered on self-improvement or
self-reinvention. (Maybe I'll write one of those myself!)
Even in recessionary times, the general acceptance of
online shopping is growing. A recent survey of online businesses showed that
22% of them expect that their online holiday sales will account for more
than 50% of their annual 2003 sales.
Fortunately, online businesses don't have as big an issue
with leadtimes as retail stores, but it's not too soon to be planning your
year-end strategies. So, get creative about your products, how you present
them and which ones to focus your marketing on. Otherwise you will be
handing a lot of prospective customers to the marketers who do!

Make Your Website Talk
- by Jim Edwards
(c) Jim Edwards - All Rights reserved
http://www.thenetreporter.com
========================
Just a few years ago, people watched in amazement as words and pictures
appeared as "websites" on their computer screens through the Internet.
Just having a website rated a major accomplishment, even a status symbol,
for businesses of every size.
Now, however, people expect websites as standard equipment for most
businesses and the Internet teems with millions of static web pages.
In such a crowded online world, how can a business
differentiate itself from all the others?
Welcome to the new frontier of the Internet where web pages, even the
small ones, dance and sing with audio and video!
In the beginning (2-3 years ago), putting audio and video on your website
involved very expensive "streaming" servers and complicated software.
In those days, audio and video remained the playground of mega-sites and
dot-com companies with unlimited budgets.
But even then, online audio and video didn't really take off because the
vast majority of it required the listener to carry a high-speed Internet
connection.
Well those days have passed forever and quality audio and certain types of
video now lie firmly in the grasp of every website owner!
Two things appeared on the scene to enable virtually any website owner to
include audio and video on their website, even for dial-up surfers: faster
computers and better compression technology.
Let's face it, most home computers now pack more punch than it took to
send men to the moon.
When you combine that with widespread use of "Flash Player," a free web
browser plug-in available at
www.macromedia.com, which enables high quality audio to stream across
the web without special servers, and you now find a perfect environment
for what amounts to online radio.
At a minimum, many sites now use audio to provide special messages from
the site's owner or enable website visitors to hear customer testimonials
in the voice and words of the actual customer.
Audio testimonials seem to add significant credibility for a website and,
since not everyone has them, also help make your website look cutting edge
and more "with it" than other sites.
Whenever technology breaks old bonds, services and software seem to spring
up almost instantly to meet the needs of consumers, in this case website
owners, who want to use the technology, but don't want to get bogged down
in the technical aspects.
For audio, two websites seem to cater to either end of the spectrum.
www.audiogenerator.com allows website owners to phone a 1-800 phone
number, record their voices to a special web server, and then paste a
simple line of code into their website to include the audio.
Customers can also call the number to record testimonials for use on the
site.
www.sonicmemo.com provides similar
functionality, however, it requires the user to record their own MP3 files
(compressed files that work well online) and upload them to their website.
As technology improves, expect to see websites adding these and even more
interactive multi-media elements to improve and enhance their ability to
deliver information.
